About Cypress Academy

A message from the owner:

Cypress Academy was established in 1982 by my parents, Richard & Mary Ann Basham.  While they didn't know too much about gymnastics, they loved children and saw the positive impact that gymnastics was having on my sister, Laurie, and me.  In the beginning, Cypress Academy was a 5,000 sq. ft. building on Huffmeister Road with just one of each Olympic apparatus and a single dance room on the second floor. The rings hung from the ceiling over the 40' x40' floor exercise mat that seemed to take up the entire gym.  In 1984, with the Los Angeles Olympics around the corner, my parents expanded the facility to 11,000 sq. ft.  With the U.S. men’s and women's successes, there was a great demand for gymnastics.  As the business continued to prosper, they found themselves needing even more room.  In 1992, they expanded to 15,000 sq. ft., and in 1995, expanded a final time to 30,000 sq. ft.

My father soon stepped out of the business in 1997 and fully retired by 2000. With his retirement, I was fortunate enough to purchase the family business.  In the previous eighteen years, my parents poured their blood, sweat, and tears into Cypress Academy.  Despite all the trials and tribulations, they never lost sight of the most important aspect of our business - the children.

My pledge to my customers, and to my mom & dad, is to carry on that vision.  In 2000, I quickly pulled my father out of retirement to put on his general contracting hard hat.  We first expanded the gym to 50,000 sq. ft. and in 2004 we made a final addition at the Huffmeister location bringing the facility to a grand total of 70,000 sq. ft.  This location offers our customers All-Star cheerleading, tumbling, recreational and competitive gymnastics. (And as of 2020 - Ninja! Keep reading to learn more!)

It didn’t take long before we were back to the drawing board to create a brand-new facility just northwest of our main location on House & Hahl Road.  This 40,000 sq. ft. gym is dedicated to recreational gymnastics and tumbling.  We have enjoyed great success at this House & Hahl Road location growing very quickly and working with a very talented and ever-expanding staff. We have since opened our third location in The Woodlands area on Tamina Road in August 2018 and our fourth location in the Tomball area off Kuykendahl and Dowdell in August of 2020.  Here Cypress Academy offers gymnastics and tumbling to countless children who we have the privilege of coaching to enable them to meet their fullest potential.

As mentioned above, in 2020 we also made some major updates to our Huffmeister location and opened our first Ninja Program to create Cypress Academy Ninja. This space dedicates 7,000 sq. ft. to our Ninjas with 2 incredible Ninja structures and 5 warped walls ranging from 6 ft. to the official 14'6" competition height. Cypress Academy Ninja has been a fantastic addition to our Huffmeister location, offering Ninja Classes, birthday parties and various other events to children (and adults!) in the area.

But that's not the end of our Ninja journey. Our Dowdell location, which will be opening in 2023 is fully dedicated to Ninja. This stand alone 27,000 sq. ft. gym is packed with state-of-the-art Ninja obstacles we can't wait for you to try out. This location will feature Ninja classes and special events for children and adults.

Please continue to follow our progress through our website and social media or stop by for a tour any time! We hope to see you soon in a free trial class or at an open gym.

Thank you for your patronage and support!
